Afgelopen augustus was ik op reis in het westen van Tanzania, veraf de touristische gebiede, in de buurt van de grens met Ruanda. Ik heb daar kennis gemaakt met John, die voor een lokale NGO (zie http://www.fadeco.org) werkt, een centrum voor armoedebestrijding en duurzame energie, maar ook een internetcafe hebben (aangesloten via een sateliet-breedbandverbinding). Nu willen ze graag een middelbare school via een draadloze verbinding aansluiten op hun netwerk, en daar zoeken ze hulp bij:
We would like to connect surrounding secondary schools to the Internet. One of the schools, Karaseco, about 10 km with a good line of sight from the base station (us). We are on a high point (hill) and the school is in a valley. By road it is 12km away. Not so many people have computers in this location. We do have a VSAT already in place with broadband internet whose signal strength (bandwidth) can be increased to cope with existing demand (over 256k). The school has a Local area network (LAN) in place.
We considered using a point-to-point connection but since we are in the interest of connecting some other institutions around of about the same range, wi-fi kind of connection would be the best option without having an so many antennae around.
We would appreciate assistance on:
-- advise on system configuration, costs of some good inexpensive material/equipment.
-- what one would need to fully geared to do to the installation.
-- advantages and/or disadvantages of using any system like that of connecting very far off places like that
